How Self-Employed Taxes Work in Canada (CRA)

In Canada, sole proprietors pay both Federal Income Tax (15% to 33%) and Provincial Income Tax (5.05% to 13.16% in Ontario). Self-employed individuals must also pay both employer and employee portions of Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions (11.9% total up to the YMPE cap).

Canadian Contractor Rate Formula:

Required Rate (CAD) = (Desired Net Income + CRA Tax + CPP + Overhead) ÷ Billable Hours

CRA Write-Offs & GST/HST Rule

  • GST/HST Registration: Required if your gross revenue exceeds $30,000 CAD in any single calendar quarter or 4 consecutive quarters.
  • CPP Contributions: 11.9% self-employed contribution rate up to the maximum pensionable earnings limit.
  • Form T2125 Business Expenses: Deduct home office space, internet, professional software, vehicle expenses, and equipment depreciation (CCA).
